Network for success
People often refer networking to Marmite – you either love it or loathe it. But let me explain why networking is so important, how you can master the art of networking on your terms and allow the people within your supportive network help you achieve success.
Is networking really that important?
In a word, yes.
It’s incredibly important, and for so many reasons. After your education and your experience, your network is the third most important thing that you need to progress in your chosen career. And if you’re a business owner, your network is essential to elevate your growth enabling you to achieve all of your goals and aspirations.
When you build your connections, you achieve a platform where you can showcase who you are and what you do, you have people in your life that you can learn from and turn to for support, and you’ll be blessed with a greater sense of belonging and self fulfilment.
It’s true that some people have a negative view of networking. They see it as something purely transactional, or view it as something that’s truly daunting. They may even consider it to be unnecessary and a burden. You’ll find that the reason they believe this is because they’ve not connected with the right people or had a bad experience. Maybe both!
But when you grow your network in a meaningful way, you’ll really benefit both professionally and personally. It really is essential, accessible and life affirming.
And remember, when you’re building your network it’s okay to not let some people in – don’t allow people into your network who drain you of your positive energy and selfishly use up your time in a way that doesn’t benefit you.
Invite people into your network who inspire you, lift you up, and those you’d love to work with. Think about having experts to help your knowledge grow, sponsors, opposites to give you a different view on things, coaches and mentees. Knowing that you have access to someone to help you in most business scenarios is so valuable. Make sure that they know that you’ll be there for them too.
