The importance of trusting yourself

“What’s that, you don’t trust yourself? You’re not alone. Most of us experience this feeling at one time or another. In this blog, I’m going to tell you what you can do to develop a mindset where you trust yourself, but first I’d like to share with you a story. This story demonstrates how destructive it is to not trust ourselves and why this mindset will, if we allow it, hold us back.

Recently I was nominated for an award. Now, instead of smiling like a Cheshire Cat, there was an obstacle – an intangible one – stopping me from enjoying the moment.

My big moment – or was it?

To ‘win’ the grant and the support that came with the award, I had to submit an application. Now, if a lovely silver trophy or a bottle of champagne had been the award then I’d have gratefully received it, but I found the idea of having to submit an application daunting. This feeling was so intense that instead of ‘going for it’ I looked to my network to find someone else who could make use of the award

So, I approached a few of my contacts and told them about the award, and that I was looking to nominate someone as my replacement.

And guess what? They responded with an overwhelming, ‘WHY? This is your award, you’ve worked hard for it, it’s no surprise you’ve been recognised as a worthy winner – just think of the good you’ll do with it.’

Putting others before myself had become a habit, I think most mums adopt this behaviour naturally and find it hard to shrug off outside of the family unit. Nurturing is wonderful, and should be a characteristic that today’s leaders possess, but when it gets in the way of trusting ourselves, it’s not healthy.

I look at others and am constantly amazed at the things they achieve. I often forget about the great things I do too. I forget to trust myself.

This is what I focussed on to finally believe in myself and get that application submitted:

  1. I took time out to rest. In this space I planned what I wanted to say.

  2. I thought about my goals and followed them. It’s good practice to remind yourself what they are!

  3. I forgave myself for having doubtful thoughts and for nearly throwing away such a fantastic opportunity.

  4. I was honest with myself – this IS what I want for me!

Finally, I have some effective tools and techniques to help you master these steps and free your path ahead so you can proceed to succeed! To learn more about them feel free to get in touch and book in a free discovery call.
